'But It's Only a Theory' - Cafe Scientifique - Introduction by Dr Roger Trend

13 weeks 3 days ago

Date of Event Or Meeting Tue, 20/03/2012 - 15:00 - 16:00

Location of Event Or Meeting Costa Coffee, Old Fore Street, Sidmouth

Cafe Scientifique is a place where, for the price of a cup of coffee, anyone can come to explore the latest ideas in science and technology. Meetings take place in cafes, bars, restaurants and even theatres, but always outside a traditional academic context. Cafe Scientifique is a forum for debating science issues, not a shop window for science.

Cafes start with a short talk by the speaker, to introduce the topic. After this there is usually a short break which is followed by an hour or so of questions and answers and general discussion. Anyone can ask a question, and those  which begin "This might be a stupid question, but ..." are positively welcomed. These questions are invariably not stupid and often rather insightful.

Sidmouth now has its own Café Scientifique, meeting on the 3rd Tuesday of each month from 3pm to 4pm at Costa Coffee (upstairs).

In March, Roger will introduce a discussion on people's perceptions of the nature of scientific theory, and how we are motivated to develop an interest in it.
